Bounty Train is an unusual economic strategy game from a small Canadian studio – Corbie Games. The production transports us to the USA, between the years of 1860 and 1868, where we participate in a non-linear story, concerning a search for a missing family and the attempts to save the native Americans from resettlement.
The gameplay has nothing to do with travelling through America with a gun in your hand, as the players step into the shoes of a greenhorn railroad tycoon. In the beginning of our playthrough we purchase a railway engine and several carriages, which we choose from different available models, each featuring its own unique attributes and price. After assembling your first machine you also have to hire mercenaries to protect your train from bandit attacks.

More About Bounty Train

This guide has been prepared for the difficult settings - Difficulty level | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
This guide has been prepared for the difficult settings

At the beginning of the game, you choose difficulty level of the game. You will not be able to change it later on. You can either choose one of the predefined difficulty settings, or adjust the difficulty manually, by accessing advanced options and moving the sliders. Game difficulty has been expressed in numbers:

  1. Income and monetary profits from contracts,
  2. accessibility of goods in the market ad their value,
  3. the duration of contracts,
  4. strength (e.g. more opponents with dynamites) and numbers of opponents during combat,
  5. Frequency of robberies.

Below the sliders, there are two check boxes:

  1. Economy hints – while you are purchasing goods, golden “thumbs up” appear, which describe the profitability of the buy, without your having to look up market statistics. This view also provides you with information on where the goods have been produced and where there is shortage of those goods (which boosts the price).
  2. Save possibility (if you uncheck it, you will only be able to rely on autosaves, which are made in important situations and after completion of missions only).

Leveling up

After you have leveled up, you pick one of three properities to develop - Your crew and development | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
After you have leveled up, you pick one of three properities to develop

You gain various amounts of experience, depending on the difficulty level you have chosen. However, you should be able to develop your character quite quickly. Development is about increasing the value of one of the suggested parameters. These are both passive and activated skills (perks), which are important, e.g. for combat (but also there is a perk that boosts your profits from trade).

Every fight is an opportunity to earn money and obtain lots of experience - Your crew and development | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Every fight is an opportunity to earn money and obtain lots of experience

You gain experience by completing various missions, especially those received from NPCs and in the city hall. However, you gain the most experience by fighting your opponents. This is why it is sometimes a good idea to fight the bandits off, instead of trying to escape them, or pay them to let you go.

Party selection

Characters with their names given in yellow are potential guards - Your crew and development | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Characters with their names given in yellow are potential guards

You can find new crew members, i.e. guards, nearly on every train station, and also in camps. In a way, the number of crew members is unlimited – you can hire a guard and leave him on a station, and pick him for a specific mission later on. Sometimes, it is a good idea to travel with only one, low level guard, if you for example transport smuggling and you fear arrest – you can then place in jail this, somewhat unnecessary guard.

The guards carriage - Your crew and development | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
The guards carriage

The number of characters on your crew depends on the capacity of crew carriage. You can attach only one carriage of this type to the locomotive, which is why you should search to buy a more sizeable one, if you want to increase your security.

What you should predominantly take into consideration, while assembling your crew, is character level (the number visible on the character’s portrait). Leveling up takes a lot of time, at higher difficulty levels and it makes more sense to replace them, instead of leveling them up. Especially former military men in Army camps, make good crew members. You must know that you can have four members of your family as a part of your team in the storyline (for free) when you complete a quest for them and you have space in your carriage (sometimes, after completing a quest they can randomly go to a different city).

While assembling the crew, it is a good idea to take several factors into consideration. With three crew members, it is a good idea to have one that performs support actions (healing, fixing carriages). You should know that passengers can put out fires – you also control them during fight, which is why skill development is not that important. Sometimes, one of the passengers may have a gun, or be a doctor, which is a good argument for, at least, one passenger carriage.

Hint: look at the skills. You can have only one activated skill out of the three available at the moment so try to specialize your heroes. Developing your unused skills is also useful but in order to use them to the fullest you must, during a stop, change the action that you perform after activating the button during a fight.

Skills

Skills - Your crew and development | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Skills

When you level up Intelligence you are able to get new skills (maximum 3, although unique companions, generated randomly, can have more of them). Each skill boosts your abilities in using a given type of weapon or gives you additional skills (e.g. repair, healing). Each skill is passive and you can select a dominating one that can be used as an active skill during fights as a special skill that recharges over time.

Marksman – increases your ability to use shotguns (a long-range weapon with great firepower, although its fire rate is low). Leveling up this skill increases rate of fire and accuracy. As a special skill it allows you to have one additional shot without reloading that deals more damage and has 100% chances to deal critical damage.

Mechanic – allows your hero to fix holes in a carriage (a hole can appear only after sustaining heavy damage). Leveling this skill allows you to increase the amount of damage that can be repaired (number of carried materials, restored to its maximum amount when you visit a city) and how fast your character can repair damage. As a special skill it can increase the speed of repairs for a certain amount of time. It is worth to have one hero with this skill but rather as an additional one (without using it as a special skill).

Firefighter – increases the speed of extinguishing a fire. A special skill increases this speed even more. It is not worth to get this skill and upgrade it because every hero (and passengers) can put out fire. If you start extinguishing it right after it appears then everyone will manage to put it out.

Engineer – the choice of this skill is based on your needs (it depends on which difficulty level you play, do you want to frequently participate in armed conflicts). Increases your train’s resistance to damage. A special skill allows you to make turns during escapes and receiving less damage when you are turning faster than you should – useful only during escapes.

Archer – archery is the domain of Natives and the same goes for companions from this ethnic group. It is a weapon with a rather small fire rate and damage but it has a high critical damage multiplier (this is the parameter that is increased when you develop this skill). A special skill allows you to poison an enemy by using toxin that reduces health of your enemy for a few seconds by a certain amount.

Gunslinger – if you want your hero to use revolvers then you should upgrade this skill. It is a short-range weapon with a higher critical multiplier than a shotgun, high fire rate and medium damage (the same goes for accuracy). It is a default weapon for the main character, Walter. A special skill allows you to increase damage and critical multiplier for a few seconds.

Butcher – if you don’t play on one of the higher difficulty levels then this skill is useless to you. Developing it increases speed of attacks. Each of the heroes can fight in close-quarters and when you notice that an enemy tries to get inside the train or when they manage to do it (but there is a certain distance between a hero and an enemy) you can still shoot them. Shooting at people that are locked in a melee fight can hurt both characters. A special skill allows you to stun your opponent for a few seconds. Remember that enemies that entered your train will try to detach your carriages which means that you can lose them forever.

Cannoneer – a very good skill, it is even worth to have two or more characters with this skill, especially if you like to fight and you install cannons in your train. This ability increases accuracy of those weapons which is useful because making a precise shot is difficult and many shots are misses. A special skill allows you to greatly reduce the reload time (at higher levels of this skill the reload time is almost immediate).

Healer – you should have at least one medic in your team, especially when you don’t have a medical carriage. Allows your hero to heal their comrades (but they can’t heal themselves). However, you can find it a little bit useless if you can afford medicines and you have them in great quantities. Leveling up this skill increases the healing speed and number of carried medicaments (they are restored when you visit a city). It is worth to mention that a character that is being healed can’t make any other actions. This process takes a lot of time but it can be reduced with a special skill that restores a certain amount of health immediately.

Survivor – increases damage resistance permanently. A special skill allows you to become immortal for a few seconds.

Trader – this skill is useful (especially if you like to fight and raid) but only on its higher levels. In default it increases your income from trade and selling items by 1%. Your main character doesn’t have to use it. A special skill, when it’s active, increases your loot from plundering by 10% per level.

Events can destroy your carriages - Events | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Events can destroy your carriages

After several tens of minutes of the game, events will begin to occur. You can look up current events by clicking on the second icon on the bar in the upper-left corner of the screen. Most frequently, events concern trading of goods and they can quite considerably affect the price of goods in select cities. Also, events may concern warfare: you should then expect to encounter more army outposts along your path and searches for smuggling. Another example are epidemics: in cities they break out, people are willing to pay to be transported to another one. One of rare events are arrest warrants. While accepting a mission in the city hall, you will be rewarded for killing a bandit on a given route (often, he has a sizeable posse and you have to kill them all). You can then claim your bounty in any city hall and you will gain experience, and guns after the fight.

“Active” events

Occasionally, you can also encounter events that do not result from the current political or economic situation, but they concern your character. Often, you will be attacked by bandits – at which point you have to defend yourself (or pay to be left alone). If this happens, you switch into combat mode and control your crew. Apart from picking targets to destroy, you also have to ensure that your train is not set on fire and destroyed. As a result of that, you can lose your cargo, carriage or even a crew member.

Escapes are usually successful. Just watch out for fire - Events | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Escapes are usually successful. Just watch out for fire

Sometimes, you can try and escape. You then switch to the driver and you have to load coal into the burner, while minding turns, where you have to slow down (to prevent damage to the train) and not to blow up the boiler.

Occasionally, you will also receive a message informing you about new locomotives and carriages being available in a given city. This offer is unlimited, but you have to remember what and where is on sale (if you are interested), because the messages are not saved anywhere.

Combat mode - Combat | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Combat mode

Sophistication of combat depends on your difficulty level. At higher levels, your main problems are the numbers of opponents, which can reach as many as a dozen-or-so men. To pick the target, you only have to click the RMB on it. To do that, you can use active pause beforehand (spacebar). In the game, there is a cover system present. They are more difficult to come by while you are inside the train, and opponents hide behind crates, tree trunks and stones.

At the gunsmiths you can buy new pistols and rilfes, as well as explosives. - Combat | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
At the gunsmith’s you can buy new pistols and rilfes, as well as explosives.

The best way to remove them from there are explosives. It is best to have as many of them as possible (you can buy them in cities from local gunsmiths, but also from bandits or soldiers) and use them often. After the battle, if you win, you will receive at least one back, from the dead opponents. Each of the crew members, should also be carrying medicine or healing herbs. You can buy them from Native Americans, in their camps, or in drugstores in cities.

First of all, you have to eliminate opponents with explosives (after the opponent approaches the edge of the screen, an icon will display, informing you of what kind of weapon he is using). They can kill quickly and destroy both the train and cargo quickly. Sometimes, there are braver opponents that enter the train and fight at close quarters – each one of the crew members should have, at least, a cheap knife for melee).

Carriages can be repaired outside of combat in the depot and your crew members can be healed in hospitals - Combat | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Carriages can be repaired outside of combat in the depot and your crew members can be healed in hospitals

Damage done to the train needs to be repaired (only a crewman with Mechanic skill), when the resistance level drops to the alarming level. After a carriage is blows up, all inside die. If your character dies, the game ends. Also, you should be wary of fires and put them oout before they spread.

Reputation

Your current Reputation can be checked at any - Reputation and factions | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
Your current Reputation can be checked at any

The Reputation shows you how respected you are. You can check out how you are viewed by each one of the four factions and by single cities. If you want to gain reputation in a faction then the best way is to complete missions for them (if possible) or pay them (e.g. bandits). A reputation in a city is increased by completing quests from post office, city hall or by transporting passengers – but only the legal transports count, for illegal you lose your reputation. A high reputation is required for more complex (and better paid) missions but there is more to that. A neutral reputation is required if you want to make a newspaper subscription. A higher reputation level is necessary to use other services (e.g. participating in an auction, using bank offers, recruiting people from a given faction). Notice that when it comes to transport missions they don’t have to start from a city in which you have low reputation – this city has only to be your goal (both sides reward you with reputation points). Reputation also has influence on lowering prices in those cities in which you are liked.

Hint: you should work on reputation from the beginning of the game and focus on it a lot. In later parts of the game it is harder to do that (or it can cost you money). You must be very cautious and avoid making enemies with any of the armies – you won’t be welcomed in their cities.

Factions: Bandits and Natives

There are four factions in the game: Bandits, Natives, Confederates and Unions. You can have good relations with all of them or you can select the one that you want to support while being a hindrance to others. A good idea (especially in the beginning of the game) is to be an ally to all factions or, at least, have neutral reputation.

Bandits – an alliance with them allows you to visit their camps in order to trade, you won’t be attacked as much, you can accept missions in Saloons to transport contraband and missions to transport wanted people (during nights). They can be found almost anywhere, especially around big cities (Pittsburgh). Relations can be worsened very quickly: by attacking them (also those that are wanted) or being caught with contraband which is a goal of smuggling missions. If you want to have better relations you must complete their missions with success but you can also pay the bandits, when you are going past their camps, to gain reputation.

Natives – they are similar to bandits, the main goal to meet with them is to trade and they can also attack you. The difference between bandits and Natives is the place in where you can find them (e.g. areas near Indianapolis). They also don’t have any special missions for you, although some side missions can increase your relations with them. Otherwise, increasing your reputation is done by money.

A good way for increasing your reputation fast is to find an enemy outpost on the map (preferably an outpost where Natives want to rob you instead of trading with you or in the case of bandits: passing by people with wanted letters) and each time you pass them by you must pay them to increase your reputation. It is not a good idea when you look at it from economic perspective but if you have a little bit of money then this way is the fastest and safest.

Unions and Confederates

Unions and Confederates – the southerners usually don’t go past areas near Washington and Cincinnati. Unions control cities north from the previously mentioned ones. You can become their ally by being useful in their cities (you can see a flag above each city which indicates to whom this particular city belongs to). When you lower your reputation with a faction you also lower it in a given city that belongs to that faction and getting it back is a difficult task (you don’t have a lot of quests, you can’t make newspaper subscription etc.). It is not that hard to maintain good relations with both factions and stay neutral, however, if you want to do that you must obey the law. You can lose a lot of reputation if a contraband can be found in your carriages or you transport an illegal refugee. Warning – you can notice that during a conflict cities can change their owners.

When the level of your bad reputation reaches about -50 with one of the armies a wanted letter will be send after your character. Which each passing day more and more cities will receive them. This means that when you enter a city someone can recognize you and you will be imprisoned. This also means that bandits can also hunt you more frequently. After some time all will calm down. However, your reputation won’t return. If your action result in sending a wanted letter after you, you will receive Jessie James achievement. When you are in a conflict with one of the factions and you want restore your reputation level you should try to complete contracts for cities that are besieged by their enemies – when you do that you also gain a small amount of reputation in both armies.

Banks: loans and deposits

In the game, inside of the bigger cities, you can find a bank institution. They allow you to take loans with a certain (variable) interest rate and an amount of money taken for a fixed term. When after that amount of time you didn’t return the loan the money will be taken from your account – the money can be returned at any bank. If you want to take a loan in a given bank you must have a high reputation in that city.

Banks can also offer deposits. If you want to take some rest from storyline quests and, at that moment, you don’t need a lot of money you can deposit them. After some time (usually after a month and a half) you receive even up to 10% profit from the deposited money. For this action you also need a high reputation but the required amount is lower than the one required for loans. After establishing the conditions a deposit will appear as a quest. After a certain amount of time you can withdraw your money from any bank. However, you can’t do it before a determined amount of time passes.

Auctions

A hotels auction - Banks and auctions | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
A hotel’s auction

Auctions appear in the storyline only after you start a quest called Daniel Drew; in free mode they are available from the beginning. You can see them in the Events tab. In the auctions you can find properties that generate a fixed amount of money or goods. A starting price is always showed to you and it depends on building’s value. If you want to take part in an auction you must head to a specified city before the time runs out and enter a city hall – there you can see an auction (requires a positive reputation, about 40 points).

An auction happens in real time. On the screen you can see your rivals and below them the current price is displayed. You can raise the bid or withdraw from an auction at any time. An auction ends when no one can give more than a price that was given by another person (those that withdraw from an auction are marked by gray color). Sometimes a final price can be five times higher than the starting price which means that you must participate in an auction with a lot of money.

A medical carriage - How to heal your companions? | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
A medical carriage

If you want to heal your companion you must go to a city in which you can find a hospital. When you click on it (a hospital is open 24 hours a day) you must then select a hero and time/amount of health that you want to restore. Sometimes the process is not cheap and it can take some time. Healing more heroes can be problematic – there is a possibility that a hospital bed is taken by a random person and you must wait a while for your turn.

The second way, which is better and not that much expansive, is to use medicines from drugstores. You only have to buy smaller or bigger bottles with medicines and drink them, even if you are in a city (click on a teammate information, drag a medicine into their equipment and after that you can notice a text, displayed under their name, saying “Use” – you must click on it).

The last way is to heal during fights / pursuits. You can use a character that has Healer skill or you have a medical carriage attached to your train (you unlock it in the later parts of the game).

A turret in a back carriage can help you greatly when you want to escape - How to get Williams/Gatling gun? | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
A turret in a back carriage can help you greatly when you want to escape

Turrets that can be installed in trains are bought in markets. They can be hard to notice on a list because you usually find one unit located in the top left corner of a station platform. A basic riffle on a stand (Williams) differs from Gatling gun – it has shorter reach, its fire rate and damage are lower but it costs less than a half of Gatling gun’s price. You can place it in any of the carriages (the best way to place them is to install those weapons in the first carriage, if you buy two) – those weapons can only be deployed in the back of crew carriage which provides defense during escapes. Their ammunition is limited – they are reloaded automatically when you stop in one if the cities. Everyone can use those turrets – if you want to increase their usability you should place someone with Cannoneer ability near them.

It is worth to attack bandits and take the goods that they had stolen - Earning money from raids | Hints - Hints - Bounty Train Game Guide
It is worth to attack bandits and take the goods that they had stolen

If you are interested in fights, want to earn money easily and you don’t want to damage your reputation you should think about raids. In order to do that you should have at least a team consisting of three characters and two or more turrets on both sides of your train. When you do that you can attack. Who? Civilian camps are your best target – attacking them is harmless and most of the camps are independent. Natives can also be an option – you don’t have much to do with them. Ultimately, you can attack bandits (it is easier to get your reputation back if you need).

In Bounty Train, it is possible to earn money in several ways. This guide provides you with pros and cons of individual profitable activities. You do not really have to stick with one, selected, way of profiting and you can change your “business activity” at any moment or profit from more than one activity. You should realize that, up until big cities are unlocked, and better machines become available, any activity is marked by low profit.

  • Market trade
  • City hall missions
  • Delivering letters
  • Passenger transport
  • Side contracts

Market trade

You trade by dragging goods, depending on market demands. - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
You trade by dragging goods, depending on market demands.

This is the basic way to profit. You simply transport goods between cities, buy cheap and sell dear. To be effective in this type of activity, you have to subscribe to the local newspaper in every city. Thanks to this, you keep abreast of current trends. This business activity involves careful analysis of the market and prices. At first, this is not a profitable one, but the situation changes after you buy bigger carriages and strong locomotives. You should realize that by dragging goods onto the part below the train, you store them in your storage for later use.

Market screen - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Market screen

Trading on your own rewards you with higher reputation in the city that you supply with goods. You can slightly increase your income by transporting smuggling (to learn more, see the chapter entitled Smuggling, below). In the long run, you will have to decide if you want to carry fewer, but heavy goods (such as steel), or you want to carry more (e.g. two carriage load) of light material, such as cotton. The former requires high financial deposits, whereas the latter requires you to follow current events and spot your chance to earn.

A bandit camp - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
A bandit camp

The best solution is to use camps at the railway side, where you will, nearly always, sell specific goods for good money and buy them cheaply. This virtually guarantees profit. However, the condition is that you have to maintain, at least, neutral relationship with a given faction, which is why robbing them does not go hand in hand with purchasing from them. The risk you take, while transporting your cargo, are bandit raids. At first, they are few and far between, but with time it is often better to try and escape the bandits or pay them off to prevent them from destroying your cargo.

City hall missions

City hall jobs - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
City hall jobs

Another type of business activity are city hall jobs. They always have a duration, the income can be sizeable, but at first, before you gain better reputation in a given city, these contracts will be small ones and with low payment. They can consist in the necessity to transport goods from one city to another, or they may require you to act of your own accord and deliver goods to the city from any source. It is a good idea to combine these with your market activity, because initially, you will be delivering goods with a part of your train empty.

It is a good practice to cover the distances between certain locations in a straight line and to strive for better reputation only in several cities, where you can quickly unlock more profitable contracts. Also, it is best to cover long distances, while loaded up, without taking any stops. This will save you time.

Delivering letters

Post office contracts - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Post office contracts

Sometimes, you can receive a contract from the post office, to deliver a letter to a specific city, as quickly as possible. Your payment will depend on how quickly you can do that: you receive the base bay with deductions for each day of delay, starting on the date on which you accepted the contract. However, you should do this as a part-time activity. You can earn pretty much on delivering letters, if your train is fast and you do not tug any carriages, but individual contracts will not come one after another.

Passenger transport

A passenger carriage - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
A passenger carriage

Passenger transport is difficult. It is best to take interest in it only after you have unlocked many routes and cities. On the other hand, however, this does not require strong locomotives, although it is a good idea to attach a small cargo carriage to passenger ones (luggage of some of the passengers). This activity is not too profitable at the beginning of the game and it will take some time before you gain a number of important clients. Also, it is a good idea to wait for such events as epidemics, when people pay more to get out of a city.

Contracts available at the train station - Comparison of profitable activities | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Contracts available at the train station

This activity should be treated as temporary – occasionally, you can attach two more passenger carriages and take several trips over longer distances, from station to station, while taking on more and more passengers. The upside of this solution is that this decreases the risk of being robbed, as well as it involves the probability that the passengers will help you in combat.

If your reputation with bandits is high, while at a train station at night, you can also agree to transport outlaws (names given in red), who pay quit a sum to get out of the city. However, you should make sure that the carriage will be crowded, because sometimes you can be controlled by law enforcement and your client may be arrested (which involves financial repercussions for you).

Side contracts

Side contracts make a good alternative when you finally become tired with monotony. In nearly every city, there are people, with their names in white, at the train station. They give you storyline jobs and they often are very complicated. When it comes to profitability, it varies – may of the contracts, even in the initial Northern cities, require you to unlock long routes to complete the contracts. The same variety goes for payments. To learn more and not to lose time over jobs of low profitability, see the chapter entitled Side contracts list, contained in this guide. There, the jobs have been described in short and provided with profits you may expect from them.

Remember to couple contraband with transport of legal cargo - Smuggling | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Remember to couple contraband with transport of legal cargo

Smuggling refers to goods illegal in some of the cities, e.g. alcohol or ammo. Cities, in which certain goods are illicit, have been marked with red exclamation mark by the goods, in the market view window. If you have already visited the city in question, you can check this piece of information by moving the pointer over the city on the map. Pulling into a city with goods that are illicit there, you risk of facing the consequences:

  1. Cargo loss;
  2. fine;
  3. reputation loss;
  4. arrest.

Carriage upgrades with smuggling compartments - Smuggling | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Carriage upgrades with smuggling compartments

The probability of being caught red-handed depends on several factors: amount and diversity of the carried goods (it is a good idea to carry, e.g. 4 crates of smuggling and 6 crates of legal goods) and, which is even more important, presence/absence of smuggling compartments in your carriages – you can do that in the depot and upgrade your cargo carriages by those. As soon as you manage to enter the city with contraband, you will not have any problems selling it for high profit. In saloons, within the city, you can receive contracts to deliver the goods (if you have, at least, neutral reputation with bandits).

The best way to obtain smuggling goods is to buy them in camps by the railway, which appear at random, but you usually can spot them early on, on your map - Smuggling | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide

The best way to obtain smuggling goods is to buy them in camps by the railway, which appear at random, but you usually can spot them early on, on your map. Bandits and soldiers often sell surplus weapon for scrap. Sometimes, when wartime is closing in, at random, you can encounter army outposts where cargo checks are performed.

If you are caught, you will pay dearly - Smuggling | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
If you are caught, you will pay dearly

To sum up: smuggling is one of the most profitable activities, but it involves high investment (barrels of alcohol and weapon crates have their weight and you should also buy smuggling compartments) and high risk of being caught.

In this chapter we focus on gathering the basic information and tips on building trains and using upgrades. Below you can also find information about repairs but you also can learn about ramming barricades that appear during each fight with enemies. Remember that you shouldn’t upgrade your worn out vehicles.

Locomotive

Sierra 4-6-0 -the best locomotive in the game - Vehicles, upgrades, damages | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Sierra 4-6-0 -the best locomotive in the game

You use your locomotive to move on the map. You can attach carriages to it if you want to transport goods and people. The amount of carriages that can be attached and how many goods can be transported depends on its ma pulling weight, the power of your locomotive. By lowering weight you increase speed (because of that it is worth to load coal yourself – those a few tones can make a difference). Each model has different parameters – buying a new one doesn’t necessary meant that it has more power, it can simply use less coal or be faster. New models are unlocked over time, two of them can be acquired prematurely by completing two side quests (check out List of side quests chapter). Below, you can see the list of all locomotives:

  1. Tom Thumb 2-2-0
  2. DeWitt Clinton 0-4-0
  3. John Bull 4-2-0
  4. Cumberland Pioneer 2-2-2T
  5. Forney 0-4-4T
  6. Chicago Pioneer 4-2-0
  7. Mogul 2-6-0
  8. General 4-4-0
  9. Sierra 4-6-0

When you upgrade a locomotive the first thing that should be done is to lower consumption and increase power. If you don’t plan on changing it in the future you should increase durability – it allows you to use this particular model for a longer time before a locomotive will start to wore out because of the number of kilometers travelled. Increasing armor is also a good option because a locomotive suffers the most during fights, especially when you hit a barricade (the repairs cost a lot and requires some time).

Carriages

Turrets can be installed in carriages allowing you for better protection from bandits - Vehicles, upgrades, damages | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
Turrets can be installed in carriages allowing you for better protection from bandits

In order to create a train you must attach carriages. Each of them has a few parameters – those, that are the most important to you are weight and capacity. There are three basic types of carriages:

Freight carriage – in default, their capacity is between 5-14 units. Each model can be upgraded and increase its capacity by up to 5 fields (depending on carriage). It is better to buy a bigger carriage or upgrade a smaller one than buying two heavier or two smaller ones. Without those carriages you can’t transport cargo or luggage for some passengers. Upgrading fire protection is very important because a cargo can be destroyed when it is exposed to fire. If you happen to transport illegal cargo you must remember to buy locker that lowers a probability of discovering a contraband. You can also find armored carriages – they are very resistant to enemies’ attacks but their capacity is smaller and they weight more.

Warning: if you have two carriages then you should place a contraband in the one in which you have better security against detecting a contraband (smaller carriages are more prone to have contraband detected, regardless of legal-to-illegal cargo ratio).

Passenger carriage – they are used to transport passengers and are lighter. You can transport from 2 to 4 passengers at the same time, depending on carriage’s size. You don’t have to upgrade them and if you really want you should focus on durability. If you happen to transport more cargo you can detach passenger carriages to lower the pulling weight.

Crew carriage – the number of companions that can travel with you depends on its capacity (from 2 to 4). It is worth to attach them at the back of a train because they don’t have any real value and because a turret can be installed in the back of it (which can’t be done with other carriages). This option can be very helpful during escapes.

Medical carriage – a special carriage that has no windows and allows you to heal your teammates during fights. It is useful especially if you don’t have a healer in your team. You should upgrade healing speed and attach it between carriages so anyone can have a quick access to it.

Mortar carriage – the last type of carriages, unlocks after many years. Mortar is a very powerful weapon, perfect against any covers that can be used by enemies. Its disadvantages are the weight and the fact that it must be used by two people.

Repairs

Carriages breaks often. You can repair them during fights / escapes (when you have someone with mechanic skill and the damage is “visible” – a hole in the floor). But usually you repair them in depots – simply click on a carriage and adjust the level of repairs. Turns, they happen during escape mini-games, that were entered with too much speed and fire that can appear during fights are deadliest for carriages.

Usually, you don’t need carriages to be in perfect condition especially when they are used and you will get new ones soon. It is worth to only repair the damage marked by an exclamation mark that have a negative impact on the speed of the entire train (e.g. wheels damage -15% to speed). A rate of damage depends only on carriage’s mileage (a percentage chance for a malfunction can be seen when you click on a carriage that is in depot).

Just remember to keep your locomotive in good shape. You lose when it is destroyed. To increase its resistance to damage during fights you should upgrade a locomotive and carriages by increasing armor and fire protection. If you want to be protected from random damage while you are travelling you must increase durability (increasing this value in a vehicle with mileage and a malfunction chance slightly lowers the probability of sustaining damage).

Ramming barricades

A barricade - Vehicles, upgrades, damages | Transportation - Transportation - Bounty Train Game Guide
A barricade

During each fight you hit a barricade that stands on tracks. The strength with which it was hit influences how quickly it gets removed, allowing you to leave a battlefield (especially when you are the one being attacked and you don’t feel like you can win or put up a fight). The ramming force depends on speed of your train – its power-to-load ratio and its construction preferences (some locomotives are explicitly described as faster but with lower maximum pulling weight). Only the last available locomotive, Sierra 4-6-0, allows you to ram barricades with full load.

The scales indicate your progression into the game – if your opponent beats you to it and obtain 51% completion of the game, you lose

The primary goal in the game is to obtain 51% of shares in companies, to seize control over them. You have to do that, before your AI opponent does. Time is of essence here, but it passes slowly and does not play major role at the beginning of the game. At the beginning, you will be finding your family members and receive shares from them. This is the period, over which you try to earn as much cash as possible, thanks to which you transport goods faster and more efficiently. Here, you are allowed a lot of freedom. You can try investments, passenger/goods transport, side contracts or train robberies. During the game, major and lesser events occur, such as war, which can affect the increased difficulty level later in the game.

This chapter discusses all of the steps you take after the beginning of the storyline in Bounty Train. You have to complete a number of missions to become independent and be allowed to take your own decisions, as to which contracts to accept. You should have no problems completing the initial stage.

Click on the NPC to talk

After the game starts, click on Jeremiah on the platform to start a conversation with him. You can get straight into action, or focus on familiarizing yourself with the details of the storyline. In the game, you will be often having conversations that will be decisive in determining if you will be capable of obtaining/completing the contract.

Open padlocks - either using your license, or cash - to unlck new routes - Contracts from Jeremiah | Walkthrough - Walkthrough - Bounty Train Game Guide
Open padlocks – either using your license, or cash – to unlck new routes

By clicking on the name of the city at the top of the screen, access the map: select Boston as your destination. However, before that, you have to click on the padlock on the route, thanks to which you unlock the route, by buying the license. You are charged for unlocking routes, which is why you should not try to unlock them all at once. This time around, though, it is free of charge.

In Boston, you have to visit the City hall – this is where you receive the majority of contracts that you will be rewarded for. Remember that offices have their business hours. By pressing the button in the upper-right corner, you can speed up time. After the conversation in City hall, return to Portland to talk to Jeremiah.

Falling by the wayside

You can lie in city hall (say that you are a worker) and you will receive a mini-quest to deliver tobacco to the city called Utica (the most important thing is that you get a license for this route for free). It is an important decision – if you don’t want to be a good guy and you want to seize any opportunities then, from now on, you will start receiving more smaller quests connected with smuggling. Thanks to that you can have a quest in which you must incur a debt to bandits (you will receive a letter from Jeremiah).

Passenger carriage for Jeremiah

You will receive a license to travel to New York. Later during the mission, you will have to obtain cash ($400) for a passenger carriage – after you have bought it, you will be able to give rides to people at stations, which often makes a convenient form of making money, when you have to make a trip anyways.

In City hall, you can collect trade contracts or contracts for assassination of wanted men - Contracts from Jeremiah | Walkthrough - Walkthrough - Bounty Train Game Guide
In City hall, you can collect trade contracts or contracts for assassination of wanted men

There are two ways in which you can earn cash for your first passenger carriage: trade or City hall contracts. You can accept contracts in any cite. Each time, they are different. They will let you earn your reputation, but often your profit may be lower than from trade. Reputation points are also required for the more demanding contracts. You can visit the City hall only during the day.

Trading is about buying goods in one city and selling them in another one, preferably in one, where there is a high demand for such goods and people are prepared to pay more. The key here, of course, is the difference between the buying and the selling price. You can learn information about demand by subscribing to the local newspaper at the post office. It costs a dozen-or-so dollars a month, but it is money well spent. Remember that the newspaper only provides information for the city in which you bought it. To keep track of prices, you have to subscribe to newspapers in cities that you visit frequently and want to trade with.

Colorful arrows appear on the screen depending on your difficulty level. They make navigation easier.

Access the Economy panel (the last button in the upper-right corner). This will displays cities and goods. The green arrow tells you for which goods there is demand in a given city, whereas the red one tells you where there is a dire need for the goods. The number represents the number of units of that goods in the city. Find the goods that there is a high demand for in Boston, which you can buy in Portland. At the beginning of the game, Medicine is the best choice. After that, press the Market button in the upper part of the screen, by the name of the city and drag the selected goods onto the train. Then, access the map and transport the cargo. Afterwards, buy oil in Boston and sell it in Portland (this is not a permanent scenario, but it’s repeatable and the profitability may not be that good). This way, you should gather enough cash for the new carriage. Talk to Jeremiah.

Access the depot (the upper part of the screen, the button to the left of the city name). Buy small passenger carriage and drag it to your locomotive.

The trip to New York

Now, talk to Jeremiah once more. Go to New York. Click on the train station building, to display all of the potential passengers and earn some more money, if there is someone going to New York. You can transport cargo and passengers at the same time.

Remember about coal – keep some money for the fuel. Otherwise, you may run into trouble. During the trip to a city, you can slow down, to consume less coal. You buy coal just like any other goods in the market and it is automatically loaded onto your train.

Urgent letter

In spite of the messages in the game, you do not need to hurry now

During your trip, an event will occur. These are minigames, where you have to steer your character (and sometimes your crew members) to perform certain tasks. In this specific one, you gave to cover the route, by controlling the locomotive: first, click RMB on the coal heap in the train, use the lever I the bottom-right corner, to increase the pressure in the boiler, but do not go beyond the red bar – this is when the boiler gets damaged. Also, you will be able to see the speedometer.

In the upper-left corner, you can view the distance that you have to cover. In the upper-central part of the screen, you can view the route to cover and possible obstacles. The most frequent ones are curves – you have to brake before the curves to reach the appropriate speed, to prevent damaging the engine and the carriages(you can use the brake lever, by the speedometer, in emergency situations). Also, you can use the valve to speed up, but this overheats the boiler and speeds the train up only temporarily – to use it again, you have to wait for it to cool down.

After you reach your destination, give the letter to Jack Godman, who is standing in front of the station. Then, talk to Jeremiah. From now on, you will have to start working on your own a bit more. Follow his suggestion and subscribe to the newspaper at the post office, thanks to which you will familiarize yourself with the trading. At this point, you should have gathered enough experience to upgrade your character. To learn more, see the chapter entitled Hints -> Your crew and development.

Your main objective in the game is to defeat your competition and obtain as many shares of the company as possible. First, you have to find your brother Robert. As of now, you have to complete three tasks:

  1. Go to Buffalo (you have the license from Jeremiah, you do not have to pay for that),
  2. Buy crew carriage ($280). If you want to buy any other carriage, refrain from that – your engine will not handle additional load. Not all of the depots offer single carriages, so try in New York.
  3. Hire a guard – pick a character with his name in yellow, at the station, to check his offer. At Boston station, you will find Bill Hickok, who will gladly join your crew for free, after you buy the carriage and talk to him.

On your way to Buffalo, you will be attacked by bandits. You have to fight them, because the route is blocked off. The only thing you have to do is select the character and have him attack or change positions, for better aiming. During the fight, you can use tactical pause to stop the battle and consider your strategy. Try to attack your opponents with the strongest weapons you have. Keep in mind that you will have to pay for hospital treatment of your crew members!

Graham wants you to deliver to him a chest from Utica, whereas Frank insists on you delivering a letter to Portland. Now, you have to head for New York and buy 10 dynamite. If you have not yet upgraded the cargo carriage, I recommend you do that now. Each cargo carriage can be upgraded by additional cargo space, but only several additional fields. The best thing to do is buy a carriage with the capacity of 10 – its weight is lower than that of two carriages of 5. Optionally, you may also be required to upgrade your locomotive, or replace it. In cities to the North-West, you can buy John Bull 4-2-0 locomotive, which is perfect for that much cargo.

Once there, go to (Gunsmith’s). However, it is not too easy to obtain dynamite – it is more than $2000. However, you can agree to the gunsmith’s offer and deliver ammo (4 units) to Pittsburgh. To avoid being caught with illicit ammo:

  1. Do not stop in the cities, where it is illegal (load coal up),
  2. Mix it with lightweight cargo, for diversity (with the ratio of 50:50, at least),
  3. Upgrade the carriage by Smuggling compartments (in the depot of any city).

If you fail the mission, you will have to pay the full amount for dynamite. Once you buy it, transport it to the repair location near Pittsburgh. It is better, however, to try and complete the mission – you will then be able to take contracts from smugglers.

Later, you will have to take the dynamite to Washington and give it to George at the train station. Finally, take Robert Reed to Cincinnati. If there is still room in your crew carriage, you can enlist him for your crew for free.

To obtain the medicine, you will have to go to any drugstore, buy them and get them back to the girl. The nearest one is in Philadelphia. Once there, you only have to buy a small phial of the medicine – all depends on how much time you have left, a larger bottle will ensure her a longer life. This is because, in the second step, you will have to obtain special healing herbs.

For the herbs, you will have to go to Louisville. There, talk to Matsuwa. He wants you to bring him the herbs and shoes. Unfortunately, the shoemaker’s is as far as in Boston, which is why it is better to buy them before you set off for Louisville. It’s enough to buy the cheapest shoes.

The final part of the mission is to vist New York’s bank

During the quest connected with Pearl you have a chance to receive a letter from which you learn about Michael’s location. He is one of the people with whom you must contact regarding stocks. You must travel again: this time you need a passenger carriage but also a cargo carriage because you must transport steel from the areas near Cincinnati.

If by any chance a destination city has some of this items you should buy as many as possible and place them in your warehouse. When you reach the destination it turns out that they don’t want to sell it and you must get 24 packs of steel – luckily, you will be paid properly. Check the economic map and find where you can buy steel for a good price. If you haven’t already made a newspaper subscription in neighbor cities then now it is a good moment to do it.

After delivering steel and brother to the target city you must go to the bank in New York. This time you don’t have to take the brother with you. However, Michael owes about 5-10 thousand dollars to the bank. You must prepare yourself to spend a lot of money before you go there. When you pay the money you complete this quest.

The prisoner

James Berry - Samuel Reed | Walkthrough - Walkthrough - Bounty Train Game Guide
James Berry

The next character that you must meet with is Samuel. If you wait too long with completing this quest then Samuel will give stocks to your opponent. Just like with Robert, here, you must also learn about Samuel’s location by meeting with James Berry in the appointed city. He is a criminal that needs you to get him out of the city. Do not offend him – by doing that you can lose a lot of bandits reputation.

You can ask him about the brother or go straight to travel costs. If you want to learn about brother’s location you must ask him about that. Otherwise, if he pays you when you reach the destination you will fail the mission (you won’t learn where to search for brother). Try to have at least a medium passenger carriage and fill it with passengers. If you see an enemy army patrols on the map you should try to avoid them, even if you have to make a long detour – your carriage can be searched through on outposts. If they find the wanted (or contraband) you can start an unnecessary fight (and lose a lot of reputation). You can also point out the prisoner (which fails the mission).

When you get the prisoner to the target he will tell you where you must search for brother. It would be good if James Barry dies earlier – Samuel will order you to assassinate him. You must acquire 12 jewelry chests that will serve as a bait for the criminal. If you won’t have the chests with you then the bandits, that stand near the tracks, will simply ignore you. After the fight you must go back to Samuel and receive stocks (4%). He can also join your team (for free).

Allan Pinkerton is a private investigator. You receive a letter from Jeremiah in which he suggests you to hire him. Sadly, his offerings are quite expensive – 1000$ per month but if you make him a favor you will receive a discount. The money must be transferred to agency account in any bank.

The favor is a simple quest in which you must transport the investigator’s five agents to the appointed cities. For that you receive a 50% discount. You must complete this quest.

The detective must be paid every month, the transaction can be done in any of the banks. If you are late with payment then Allan won’t be working for you until he gets the money. His task is to inform you about your opponent’s actions allowing you to act sooner. This is done by completing special quests whose goal is to prevent your enemy from getting additional stocks.

Daniel Drew

At some point of the game, as another stage of taking over the company you receive a letter informing you that the holder of a few percent of stocks – Daniel Drew – can sell them to you. Sadly, when it comes to money you can have some problems – he wants about 20 000$.

From now on you can participate in auctions - Shareholders | Walkthrough - Walkthrough - Bounty Train Game Guide
From now on you can participate in auctions

Playing with properties can be an alternative. You must buy three hotels and trade them for company shares. If you decide to do this quest you will be informed about auctions that take place in specific periods of time in appointed places (you receive an information and reminders). However, it is a long period of time and you probably can get those 20 000$ but buying the hotels will be cheaper.

Jason “Jay” Gould

Another shareholder that has 3% stocks. He offers to put them up for auction in New York. You should save money until the participation time ends so you won’t miss a good deal.

Henry B. Plant

If you want to complete this quest with ease you must have at least 80 respect points in Unions. After the conversation with Henry you must head to a city and pick up a mortar. If you don’t have enough reputation then, luckily for you, you can get a permission that allows you to get the weapon.

In order to get it you must deliver 12 chests with weapons to a city in the north. If your destination is Buffalo then you must use an additional carriage that will allow you to safely smuggle the weapons.

When you get the permission you must go back to Charles Knapp. He orders you to get a mortar in a different city. It is worth to know that it is an additional carriage that weights 25 tons. If you have rather good relation with the Unions then you can intercept the mortar and deliver it to them in exchange for increasing your reputation. There is always the third option: keep the mortar – this one is different from others that can be bought because you only need one person to use it instead of two. However, you must remember: if you break the contract you lose the chance to get the stocks but, in addition to that, your enemy gets them (3%)!

Leland Stanford

This man won’t sell you his stocks for money but you must complete his quest. You need to have good relation with bandits (50 reputation points). You must head to any Saloon and ask about Jason’s stolen brooch. You receive an order to contact with Daniel Hobbs. You can buy it back for 5000$ or take it by using force. Then, you must give it back to the owner.

You should wait for an event with a wanted letter. When you pass by a bandit and you pay him a toll you receive a little bit of reputation. Otherwise you have to complete a few quests for the thieves in Saloon / transport escapees.

Mark Hopkins

This quest is rather unusual. Mark will give you his stocks if you level up his son, Timothy. This means that you must have free space in your crew carriage and a good team – the quickest way to level up is to participate in fights.

When you return the son to his father he will sell his stocks (3%) for 5000$. His son can stay as your companion.

James Fisk

Another shareholder. He has a rather unusual task for you- you must take a passenger with you – Edward Stokes – and make him die. You can demand 10 000$ for this quest, however, you won’t get the stocks. You must attack one of the factions or be attacked and relocate Edward in a such a way that he will be under enemy’s fire.

Charles Crooker

This quest may not be easy. You must head south and transport cargo for Charles. However, you must be prepared for possible escapes from Natives/Armies or bandit raids. The cargo are three small bags. In next cities you get additional ones: 5+2, 10 in total. Finally, you can deliver the cargo to the appointed city where you complete this quest.

Side quests are given by random characters with white names that are met at the stations

In this chapter you can find the list of available side quests. Characters that are connected with them are found at stations and have their names colored in white. You don’t have to complete them, however, some of them are very profitable and doing them can be a good way to rest from the city hall contracts. It is worth to check out this list right after you start the game.

Warning: some characters may not appear right away but after some time (regarding historical events and characters like Samuel Colt or Abraham Lincoln). Some heroes may demand from you to transport them to other locations but this won’t happen often. They are found in stations in randomly selected cities but they always have the same names. This also applies to the nature of their quests.

Joseph Gayetty: medical paper (8x) transport – money and experience;

Elisha Duffy: transport food (3x) to Boston and Portland – if you bargain with him a little during your first conversation with him you receive 100$ or a slightly damaged small passenger carriage.

Rose O’Neal Greenhow: asks you to transport and deliver ammunition (6x) – experience, a lot of money and increased Confederates reputation.

Frank Workman: connected with the main storyline – he promises that if you deliver a letter to Mary in Portland he will tell you where you must search for Robert Reed (this information is given by Mary);

Graham Schmidt: connected with the main storyline. If you bring him one chest from an appointed city he can tell you where you must search for Robert Reed or he can pay you (appears only in free play).

Bennett Harmon: transport 6x weapons chests – money.

Samuel Colt: head to Wilmington and take a revolver for display (requires positive reputation in Wilmington). In practice you can keep the revolver instead of completing the quest. For this task you get money and experience but you also get a new quest, with a reward as good as the previous one: bring chests with weapons (14x) again to the quest giver.

Amelia Larson: the woman is looking for a lost man. A man called Jack Gillespie informs you that Eli is dead and will give you a medallion. Give it to the woman and you will receive experience as well as a good revolver.

Abraham Lincoln: take him to Washington – money, experience, Unions reputation increased.

Lewis Addison Armistead: this quest can be completed in two ways:

  1. When you reach your destination you must speak with Lewis (experience and Confederates reputation increased as well as a good rifle);
  2. Take him to the second city and hand him over to Unions general: Ulysses Grant (experience, money and Unions reputation increased).

Glikmann: he claims that he has a treasure map. Tell him that you can give him a ride (to 3 locations) for 1/4 shares. The treasure are a few barrels with alcohol.

Willliam Allen Fuller: you must complete the “racing” mini-game within a specified time. You get experience and Confederates reputation. In addition to that you can buy General locomotive for 6000$ in the target city (the locomotive is slightly damaged).

Matthias Forney: a rather complex quest but it is worth your effort – as a reward you get Forney 0-4-4T locomotive. After that you must wait one month and the locomotive is yours. Its regular price is 7400$ so you not only save a lot of money but you can also get it before it hits the market. You must bring to city:

  1. 20 oil barrels,
  2. 18 packs of steel,
  3. 12 tools chests.

Booker Sharp: you must escort a prisoner to a target destination – money, a little bit of experience and Unions reputation (but you lose a small amount of Bandits reputation). However if you speak with the prisoner he will make a counteroffer: if you agree you lose Unions reputation but you get Bandits’ respect.

Stephen Duncan: you must transport 50 wool bales to New York within a month and a half. You don’t have to transport them from the place where you get this quest: you can buy them, e.g. in Boston and transport to the destination city.

Clara Kirby: wants to sell you for 12$ a key to a warehouse with alleged 30 Tobacco chests – at least that is what she says because this is a fraud – no rewards.

Noah: the slave wants to escape from the city:

  1. Transport him accordingly to his wish: he joins you, he has a rather high level; experience and Unions reputation.
  2. Notify the authorities about his escape: Confederates reputation.

Zerah Collburn: take him to Philadelphia. Shortly after that you can buy Mogul 2-6-0 locomotive.

John Yates Beall: you must transport three agents to the appointed place (John, Henry and Belle) – a lot of experience and money. However, you must watch out: there is a high chance that they will be arrested when you reach the destination (they are wanted in the target city as well as the neighbor ones). When this happens you fail the quest.
