Look in every corner if you want to experience every tense moment the game has to offer as well as the entire plot - Game Guide - About the guide - Game Guide - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughLook in every corner if you want to experience every tense moment the game has to offer as well as the entire plot

Until Dawn is not an extremely challenging game considering its gameplay yet you may need some help with solving it’s puzzles jest such as the hidden clues or the totems which are the main collectibles in this game and they allow you to get to know the entire story. Even more important is the fact that you are going to have a lot of choices about the order of participating in game’s events and you will have to decide how are you going to react on them. Your actions will result in the end you will face, either it will be a happy ending or a complete failure. Some could call this game a logic game although a lot of times you have to just trust your intuition and suppositions. To make this guide more user-friendly we use the color designations described below:

green – a clue to collect,

orange – an object to collect which is significant to the story,

blue – a totem,

red – an important decision,

black bold – a quick-time event.

We consider an object “important” when it’s absolutely essential for moving the plot forward or it allows you to unlock a unique interaction which in most cases will allow you to collect a trophy. The “important decisions” will occur when you are going to decide about the heroes’ future in a significant way. It may remind you a “butterfly effect” since sometimes a very small decision may result in a character’s death. We also used this designation to highlight the actions which allow you to receive a trophy even though they are not essential for the plot.

One of the decisions - Climb quickly or carefully - might impact the outcome of the whole plan - Decisions and choices | General advices - General advices - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughOne of the decisions – Climb quickly or carefully – might impact the outcome of the whole plan

The whole game is mostly based on more or less important choices. Sometimes they only seem to be unimportant. The main objective of the game is allowing every character to survive till dawn while death waits behind almost every corner. What is important, the death of any character, depending on when it occurred, might cause different actions of other characters. It might even make it impossible to save someone else (if the person that died previously was supposed to later save another one).

In addition to dialogue and action decisions, there are also action sequences in the game, during which you must press specific buttons in the right order and time or you must aim your weapon at an object or character. Each of these actions usually have large consequences and requires reflex and cautiousness, as they might start during any cutscene and surprise you.

What’s important and worth remembering, is that, despite the fact that this is not a puzzle game, the ability to quickly deduce and to make decisions based on intuition is the key ability. Many times it might happen, that it is better to not do anything than to do everything that is possible.

The group of choices made during running/climbing is a specific one. In that case you must select between shortcuts or following the path. You must be able to grade the threat level (or you can find the information about it in this guide) to decide which path is better. If you don’t need to hurry (low threat), it is better to pick the longer roads – usually there are more action sequences there, and the ones that will occur will give you slightly more time to react.

One of the clues - a family portrait - Clues (collectibles) | General advices - General advices - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughOne of the clues – a family portrait

Clues are the collectibles in the game. They are hidden in various places in each chapter. The best strategy to collect as many of them as possible (or even all of them) is to always go in the other direction than the one pointed by the camera – the camera always guides you to the next objective, and the road back, to the left, or to the right will let you enter a side room, hiding important collectibles. Collecting the clues (except one, mentioned in the walkthrough – chapter 10) is not mandatory and doesn’t impact the game ending. However, the clues aren’t completely separated from the story – when you find something interesting as one character, you can then see as that characters tells what he or she found to someone else during some cutscenes. Some hidden objects can be collected by more than one character. However, since often some rooms are only available for a short while, it is wise to look around thoroughly each time. Totems can be also considered as classic collectibles. However, since they are quite specific, you can learn about them in the next chapter called Totems.

One of the black totems - the death totem. - Totems | General advices - General advices - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughOne of the black totems – the death totem.

Totems are pretty easy to find. They have no impact on the game if you want to depend only on your intuition (or this guide). Totems are small hints, not always clear and understandable, that shows you the fragments of a possible future – your decisions will determine whether the outcome will be same as in the visions. What’s important, they not always show the close future, sometimes a totem found at the beginning of the game might show you one of the last actions before the game ends… Collecting all totems will allow you to watch a video – events from the past.

Totems are divided into 5 categories:

death totem – shows you the possible deaths of the character that finds it;

guidance totem – shows you the events to which he might want to get, as they are good;

loss totem – shows which friends can die in what circumstances… in difference to the death totem, loss totems don’t show the future of the character that found them;

danger totem – show what you can expect soon. Each of the events shown by this totem will be related to making a decision or participating in an action sequence;

fortune totem – shows you some good events in the future. Fortune totems are hard to analyze, but after examining them thoroughly you will notice that they are the best help when it comes to making decisions.

Dr Hill - notice the snake in the jar and the syringe on the desk - its part of players choice - The analyst | General advices - General advices - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughDr Hill – notice the snake in the jar and the syringe on the desk – it’s part of player’s choice

After each episode (or rather before the start of the next one) you will participate in a conversation with the analyst, or maybe you should better call him a psychologist. During each conversation you will receive many questions and will participate in examination that will try to characterize you – the player. The decisions about what you are afraid are especially important.

Zombie doll - its only one of three options - The analyst | General advices - General advices - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughZombie doll – it’s only one of three options

For example, during one meeting you will clearly describe your fears (for example, needles, types of animals/insects) and then you will notice as these elements appear in the game (for example, a spider will walk over the camera, or during the next visit at the analyst you will notice the mentioned objects on his desk). Another example is choice of what forms you are afraid of: clowns, zombies or scarecrows – the exact dummy will appear in the chapter III while playing as Chris, when you select a side path. Depending on whether you are telling the truth or lying when visiting the doctor, you can increase or lower the level of stress and fear during the game.

This is THE End

(Gold) Nobody survives.

The easiest way to kill everyone:

  • Jessica – let her die in the episode 4. As Mike chose the slower paths and fail at QTEs.
  • Matt – kill him by making him attack the deer and allow him to fall of the cliff in Episode 6.
  • Emily – episode 8. Ignore the QTEs and let wendigo kill her.
  • Chris – let wendigo kill him during chase from the Episode 8.
  • Ashley – follow the “weird noises” in the mines from the Episode 9. Open the flap in the door what will allow wendigo to kill her.
  • Josh – Episode 10. Don’t collect the information about Hannah turning into wendigo which normally you may find next to the watermill.
  • Sam – she may die only during Episode 10. When she will try to hide from the wendigo in the shelter wait for the moment, when she needs to stay still. Move to kill her.
  • Mike – if Sam will not kill him by turning the light in the end of the Episode 10 he may do it by himself.

(Gold) All eight friends live.

Below, you can find a digest of events and of what needs to be done to make all eight friends survive.

Episode 4

If the fourth episode, Jessica may die. Regardless of the choices that you have made earlier, before you reach the cottage and Jess is kidnapped, when Mike starts his chase after the girl, you cannot skip the arcade actions, nor take the longer path (take shortcuts) more than once. As soon as you find Jess in the mine on the elevator, during the cutscene, take a closer look at the body – if you can only see a cut on the chest, she will live. If her mandible is ripped off, you do not meet her ever again.

Episode 5

When as Matt, with Emily, you reach the station, disagree with the idea of going to the tower. This is not a compulsory option, but it will make it easier to make decisions later on and allows you to reach the best solution possible.

Episode 6

In episode six, you need to rescue more people. Starting with Matt: in the beginning scene do not attack the bucks, if you do, you can survive only if you perform the arcade actions. Later on, you find a signal pistol on the tower. Depending on your decisions in episode five, you now have two options:

  • If, in episode 5 as Matt, you refused to go to the tower, give Matt the pistol. He does not fire it and therefore, he will be able to defend himself from wendigo (while falling down from the tower, try to save Emily twice).
  • If Matt wants to go to the tower, he uses the signal pistol right after he receives it from Emily. The only way to save him is not to rescue Emily after the tower collapses, and to jump over to the rocky ledge to save yourself.

In the final scene of this episode, Chris needs to decide whether he wants to save Ashley, or himself. It is necessary that you pull the trigger next to your head – thanks to this, you an save Chris in episode eight.

Episode 8

There are two key moments in this episode. First, as Emily, you need to escape from the wendigo in the mine. The only way to do this is perform all of the arcade actions. Optionally, If Emily has the signal pistol on her (she did not give it to Matt in episode six) she needs to shoot the wendigo past the last door, or she dies. If she does not have the pistol, she does not die, but she gets wounded.

In the next scene, if you led Emily to safety and she got wounded (she did not have the pistol), you need to decide whether she is to live or to die, by shooting her or waiting for the time to perform the action to elapse. It is Mike that does this. Both decisions, in spite of the death a protagonist, reward you with a minor trophy.

The final scene is Chris’s escape from the wendigo. After the Stranger dies, the chase to the shelter stats. Along your path, you need to perform two arcade actions, and fire at the wendigo three times. If you miss it, at least once, Chris dies. If, in episode 6 you did not point the pistol at yourself and at Ashley instead – Chris dies (he will not be admitted into the building).

Episode 9

In episode 9 Ashley may die, but this can be easily avoided. As soon as the group enters the mine, and Ash lags behind a little bit, you can examine the strange sounds by getting separated from the group even more (you find one of the totems there) but, under no circumstances should you open the trapdoor in the floor. If you do not open the trapdoor, you will rejoin the group after a while.

Episode 10

In episode 10 nearly all of the protagonists may die. First, as Sam, with Mike, as soon as you enter the water reservoir, examine the entrance to the left of the mill, where you find Hannah’s journal that ensures Josh’s survival.

Another scene happens if Jessica (and optionally Matt) survives and gets to the mines. Since Jess is wounded, each time (2x), when you are asked to make a decision, you need to hide and stand still.

The last scene is where the protagonists are in the shelter. You play as Sam and there are two things that you need to do: first, rescue Mike, then hide and stand still for as long as all of the friends get out of the cottage. Under no circumstances, should you run to the light switch before that, or Mike dies.

The walkthrough contains detailed information about how to complete each chapter. Thanks to that, you won’t get lost when searching for solutions to the riddles, and you will learn about the key choices in the story. The walkthrough focuses mostly on the “good” ending of the game, which means: every character survives. Because of that, the choices presented in this guide aren’t the only good ones. They are the ones that are clearly leading to the good ending. However, because of the trophies that sometimes are given for “bad” decisions, information about the possibility to obtain a trophy can be found in the walkthrough. If you want, you can unlock them at any time after completing the game, by loading a selected episode. You will also find information about the collectibles that can be found. Before each new chapter a small meeting with the analyst (psychologist) will occur. Answers and decisions made there won’t be very important, but they can impact the game world. More specifically, they can impact the player, changing some elements to match the answers (or contrary) – you can learn more about it from The Analyst chapter in General advices.

Chris backpack on the bench before the station - Episode 1 | Walkthrough - Walkthrough - Until Dawn Game Guide & WalkthroughChris’ backpack on the bench before the station

After a while you will notice an information board, and the guidance totem #1 underneath it. Before the house you will find a backpack: you can close it or check it – it will impact one of the butterfly effects (Any of Your Business) – the events that seems to be irrelevant, but that will later impact the fates of the characters. This time it’s not a very important choice.

Go with Chris to the shooting range. You will notice a wanted poster on your way – one of the clues. At the range, you must aim and destroy the marked targets. The squirrel might cause a butterfly effect (Rats With Bushy Tails) – it is recommended not to kill it. Otherwise, Sam will get hurt and it will make further actions harder. After playing, enter the station and wait for the trolley.

Now you need to choose saving Emily twice if you want both of them to stay alive (butterfly effect: Save Yourself). When Matt will dodge he will be kidnapped by wendigo. You have to aim at it and shoot it fast to keep your friend alive.

Warning – it is important if you have agreed to Emily’s plan in chapter five. If you don’t remember what was your decision just try to remember what did Matt do with the signal gun once he got it. If he fired instantly the only way to save him is to not try to save Emily but instead to try keep himself alive by jumping from the tower on the platform. They will both survive however their relationship will be much worse what does not make it the most beneficial option. In this case Matt will not be attacked by wendigo so the gun will not be necessary.

This is not the end, because behind the wall, where you can see the light coming from, in the same room, there is one more note on the events of 1952 – suicide note. Now, go to the other end of the corridor.

After you go past the gate, you see a dropping box – do not shoot at it and, instead, shoot at the wendigo that appears right afterwards. Go left, and get ready to barricade the door quickly. Optionally, you will have to press the button to use the machete and, after a wile, bar another door.

In the corridor, you need to avoid being caught by a wendigo behind the gate for five times (arcade actions), but if you miss them with your gun, nothing really happens. As soon as you reach the end of the corridor, try to push against the door, which is not too effective, and then, in the arcade actions, tip over the barrel, give it a push and finally, fire the gun at it.

Now, to have the rest of the friends in the shelter survive, you need to couple each option with hide and stand still after each time. This is the last series of actions in the game – butterfly effect The Result of Chaos.

Additional information: if you saved Josh, but you are wondering why it is not mentioned in the ending, wait for the credits to finish rolling, to see an additional cutscene.

Ashley may use the scissors during the Episode 8 if she has taken them from the desk during the Episode 6. They are next to the Lightbulb Catalogue.
