Expect more ads in Facebook Messenger.
The social media giant on Tuesday started rolling out ads within its messaging app to advertisers worldwide.
The ads will appear in the home tab of Messenger below the chat threads. Clicking on an ad will direct users to a business’ website or a conversation in Messenger with that business.
Facebook started testing these ads on Messenger in Australia and Thailand, but is expanding it to others globally. Only a small percentage of users will see these ads in the coming weeks as part of the test, according to Facebook.
The move comes as Facebook is limiting the amount of ads users see in their News Feed and expects its ad revenue growth rate to come down this year. Too many ads could deter or annoy users from staying on its website.
It’s also been ramping up efforts to make it easier for businesses to connect with customers on Messenger.
The tech firm grew its revenue to $8 billion in the first quarter, which runs from January through March. Facebook is scheduled to report its second quarter earnings on July 26.
