Microsoft just announced a newer version of the Xbox Wireless Adapter that is significantly smaller than the earlier one.
If you’re the kind of PC gamer who hates using a mouse and keypad and prefer the simplicity of a console controller like the Xbox then perhaps you’re familiar with the bulkier version of the adapter. Or maybe you’ve seen gamers with a large cumbersome black eyesore sticking out of their PC.
The newly designed adapter is a lot slicker and clocks in at 66 percent smaller. It honestly looks like nothing more than a small flash drive. In other words it blends in and isn’t unsightly.
Microsoft also touts the new guy’s connectivity. It can connect up to eight controllers at any given time to your Windows PC. In addition you can link up to two stereo headsets or four chat headsets.
In terms of compatibility, the adapter will only work with Windows 10 PCs and laptops. Xbox 360 controllers are a no-go. Though by now we should all be using the Xbox One controller anyway.
The Xbox Wireless Adapter is available for shipping starting August 8th for only $24.99. Though you can pre-order them now from the Microsoft Store. With free shipping that’s pretty dirt cheap. It’s perfect for anyone looking to transition from a console to PC or if a controller is just more your speed.
Though I’ll warn you, controllers are never as fast as a mouse or keyboard, especially when wireless. This could act as a severe disadvantage if you’re playing a game that requires quick reaction time like a first-person shooter. Try going toe-to-toe with a keyboard and mouse gamer in Competitive mode in Counter-Striker (CS:GO) if you want to test the difference.
Though for slower-paced games a controller will do just fine.
