After what Uber says was a successful first launch in Texas, the company’s newest standalone app — a platform that matches truckers with loads that need hauling — is expanding into San Francisco, Los Angeles and a handful of other metro areas.
The San Francisco-based ride-hailing company in May unveiled Uber Freight, a new app that lets truckers and trucking companies book loads the same way party-goers and commuters across the world use Uber to book rides. The idea is that by letting truckers book routes directly, taking the third-party booker out of the equation, truckers save money on middleman fees and eliminate the time and hassle spent booking routes over the phone.
“We’ve helped carriers and their drivers haul everything from water to oranges to furniture, and we’ve been blown away by the community’s feedback,” the company wrote in a blog post. “Our drivers love the transparency and fast payment that come with Uber Freight.”

Now the platform is expanding into areas in California, Arizona, the Chicago-Midwest region, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
“While today we still have most of our loads in Texas,” the company wrote, “over the coming months drivers can expect to see an ever-increasing number of loads available on the app in these new markets.”
Uber Freight also is getting smarter. A new feature allows the app to learn drivers’ preferences based on the past loads they’ve selected, their home base, and other factors, and will alert the driver when a load is available that matches those preferences.
“The excitement we’ve seen from drivers and shippers alike keeps us focused on innovating in ways that put drivers first,” Uber wrote. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but are more excited than ever to deliver on the promise of leveling the playing field for America’s truck drivers.”
