Until somebody invents reliable teleportation, remote access software such as TeamViewer is the next best thing – for computer and business things, at least.

It’s designed to transport you to whichever PC you need to be on, giving you complete control over it from far away so that you can fix problems, find files or just play a prank on a co-worker.

Why you need it

Because it’s brilliant. Forgot to bring a file to work? Connect to your home PC and you can drag and drop it to your work PC. You can remotely remove all the toolbars and spyware from relatives’ computers, or install drivers on a faraway PC. The applications for tech support situations are obvious, but it’s great for flinging files around too. It’s especially useful if you work from multiple locations, or have to work with people in multiple locations.

One word of warning: never, ever install a remote access app if you’re being asked to by someone you don’t know and trust, such as someone calling you on the landline pretending to be from Microsoft or Amazon. That’s a very common and dangerous scam that uses the great powers of remote access software for bad purposes.
