Delphi and Mobileye have announced earlier this week that they will be using Intel chips in powering their future self-driving cars which are envisioned to come by 2019.
The future Intel-powered self-driving cars will be made in a collaboration between Delphi Automotive Plc and Mobileye NV.
Delphi Automotive is a United Kingdom-based company which provides and supplies automotive and commercial vehicle parts for the respective markets.
Mobileye is an Israeli-based company which produces and develops driver assistance systems which are based on advanced vision algorithms.
The two companies have partnered up as they are trying to develop and produce an autonomous self-driving car.
As their first such vehicle should become available by the end of 2019, the two have entered what is slowly but surely becoming quite a competing market area.
Other big companies such as Uber Technologies, Tesla Motors, or Google, the Alphabet Inc owned giant company are already in a competition.
As the companies are trying to become the first provider of autonomous vehicles, the United States auto industry could feature an important transformation.
According to a recent statement released by Glen De Vos, the Delphi Vice President, one other company has joined in its efforts.
De Vos announced earlier this week that the company will be using Intel chips, which will effectively be at the center of their future cars’ software.
Intel is no stranger to the area as it already working with BMW AG, the German luxury brand, and Mobileye on developing autonomous vehicles.
As this emerging market will most likely only be increasing, Intel chips will be probably ensuring if not their dominance, at least their presence in the industry.
De Vos declared that the Intel chips will work as a “system on chip” for their cars, which will probably be used in the initially commercial vehicles.
According to their Tuesday statement, the first Delphi and Mobileye cars will most likely target commercial usage vehicles.
Although the company is in talks with both new and established carmakers as well as niche companies, their product will initially be too expensive for a personal car.
De Vos stated that the first such models will most likely be used in limited operation areas such as ride-hailing services or airport shuttle systems.
The reason for its somewhat restrictive use is the current LIDAR system being used on them and which is rather expensive.
The LIDAR is an electromechanical laser imaging technology which could be considered as ensuring the vehicles’ eyes.
The system and a general demonstration of the Intel chips powered self-driving vehicle made by Delphi and Mobileye will be presented next year.
It should take place during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which will take place in January 2017.
Delphi is already testing in Singapore its vehicle’s autonomous driving technology. The company will also start testing the technology in the United States as it hopes to choose a city by the end of 2016.
The company hopes to release a US fleet of self-driving vehicles in either Boston, Pittsburgh, or a number of other American cities.
